Lightning Source UK, the leading provider of combined book manufacturing and distribution services, is celebrating the printing of its one-millionth book. Powered by the world's leading digital book library, Lightning Source stores books electronically and delivers them 'on-demand' in either traditional printed format or as e-Books to fulfill orders from publishers, booksellers and libraries.
"Seven years ago, we decided to create a whole new business for the book industry - to offer publishers more control over their inventories and give retailers the benefits of having more titles available," said Lightning Source Chairman and Founder, John R. Ingram. "Our new business was print on demand and Lightning Source. In just a few short years, we looked to expand these services internationally, and the UK was the right match. More books are published in the UK with shorter print runs than in the US, so this helped to make the UK the perfect market for print on demand."
"Printing our one-millionth book marks a major milestone," said Lightning Source UK's Managing Director, David Taylor. "Lightning Source UK was set up in 2001 and in only 3 years we have made a significant difference to the publishing industry. We are very much looking forward to building on this success and continuing to provide a cost-effective service to publishers, authors, retailers and libraries across the UK."
"Lightning Source UK's one-millionth book is a noteworthy indicator of how Lightning Source is revolutionizing the options available to the publishing industry on a global basis," said J. Kirby Best, President and CEO of Lightning Source Inc. "My congratulations to every member of the Lightning UK team that made this possible."
The Cambridge Companion to the Eighteenth Century Novel, edited by John Richetti and part of the Cambridge Companions series is Lightning Source's one-millionth book to be printed "on-demand." First published by Cambridge University Press in 1996, it remains one of the definitive guides to eighteenth century literature.
Lightning Source UK hosted its one-millionth-book celebration at the exclusive Light Bar at the St Martin's Lane Hotel in London on 23rd June 2004. Attending the celebration were key figures in the print, book and publishing trade from around the world.
